TL;DR

  • An AI checkout link is a pre-filled URL that drops the exact product, variant, and quantity into a shopper's cart - and applies a valid discount - then sends them straight to checkout. No browsing, no add-to-cart step.
  • An AI agent can generate one the instant a shopper says "I'll take it," turning a chat reply into a one-click path to purchase.
  • On Shopify, these run on cart permalinks in the form /cart/{variant}:{qty}?discount=CODE.
  • Chatonbo's AI shopping assistant builds these links automatically: it resolves the exact variant, checks stock, and validates the discount code against your live store before it ever offers it - never a fake code.
  • Checkout links are a Business-plan feature ($59/mo). The link sends shoppers to your own Shopify checkout - Chatonbo never processes payment.

What is an AI checkout link?

An AI checkout link is a pre-filled checkout URL generated by an AI agent during a conversation. Instead of telling a shopper "you can find the blue hoodie in size medium on our products page," the agent hands them a single link that already contains the right variant, the quantity they asked for, and a working discount - and opens directly on the checkout screen.

The key idea: every extra step between intent and purchase leaks conversions. A shopper who has already said "yes" still has to find the product, pick the correct variant, set the quantity, hit add-to-cart, navigate to the cart, and apply a code. Each of those is a chance to get distracted, second-guess, or abandon. An AI checkout link collapses all of it into one tap.

This is the difference between a chatbot that *answers* and an agent that *acts*. For the broader pattern, see [agentic commerce](/glossary/agentic-commerce) - AI that completes tasks instead of just describing them.

Why removing the add-to-cart step lifts conversion

Classic cart and checkout funnels lose shoppers at every transition. Industry research has long put average cart abandonment near 70%, and a large share of that is friction, not lack of intent - surprise steps, re-entering details, hunting for a promo code.

A checkout link attacks the friction directly:

  • It removes navigation. The shopper never has to relocate the product they were just discussing.
  • It removes variant ambiguity. The link encodes the exact size/color/style, so there's no "wait, did I pick the right one?"
  • It removes discount hunting. The code is already applied and already validated, so there's no "code not found" dead end at the worst possible moment.
  • It captures intent at its peak. The moment a shopper says "I'll take it" is the highest-intent moment in the whole journey. A link fired right then converts far better than an email sent hours later.

That timing matters more than most stores assume. According to platform data reported by Gorgias, the majority of purchases that follow an AI recommendation close within roughly 48 hours. Treat that as a reported signal rather than a guarantee - but the takeaway is sound: when an AI surfaces the right product, the window to close is short, and a ready-to-use checkout link is how you close inside it.

How Shopify cart permalinks work

Shopify has a native, documented feature for this called cart permalinks. A cart permalink is a URL that pre-loads specific variants and quantities into a cart and can carry a discount.

The basic shape is /cart/{variantId}:{quantity} - and you add a validated discount with ?discount=WELCOME10 on the end.

A few important details:

  • The number after the colon is the variant ID, not the product ID. Every size/color combination has its own variant ID. Getting this wrong is the most common mistake - it either fails or adds the wrong item.
  • You can stack multiple variants: /cart/123:1,456:2 adds one of variant 123 and two of variant 456.
  • The discount parameter applies a code at checkout - but only if the code actually exists and is active in your store. A made-up or expired code shows the shopper an error at checkout, which destroys trust at the exact moment you need it most.

This is precisely why the *validation* step matters. Generating the URL is the easy part. Generating a URL that resolves to the right variant, in-stock, with a discount that genuinely works - that's the hard part, and it's where an AI agent has to be careful.

How Chatonbo's AI does it safely

Chatonbo's [AI shopping assistant](/solutions/ai-shopping-assistant) builds one-click checkout links as part of the conversation, with three guardrails baked in:

  1. Grounded recommendations. It recommends products from your *live* catalog, not from a stale snapshot or a hallucinated guess. If it suggests an item, that item exists in your store.
  2. Stock checks. Before building a link, it confirms the variant is actually available. It won't send a shopper to checkout for something that's sold out.
  3. Validated discounts only. When a discount is part of the offer, Chatonbo checks the code against your live store first. If the code isn't valid, it isn't offered. There are no fake codes and no "discount not found" surprises at checkout.

Once those checks pass, it assembles the [checkout link](/glossary/checkout-link) as a Shopify cart permalink and drops it into the chat the moment the shopper signals intent.

One thing Chatonbo deliberately does not do: handle payment. The link sends the shopper to *your* Shopify checkout, on your domain, with your trust badges and your payment setup. Chatonbo never touches card data or processes a transaction. It gets the shopper to the doorstep; your store closes the sale.

AI checkout links vs. classic cart recovery

Most stores treat cart recovery as an *after-the-fact* problem: the shopper leaves, and hours later an abandoned-cart email tries to win them back. That works, but it fights an uphill battle against a shopper who has already mentally moved on.

AI checkout links flip the model from recovery to prevention. Instead of rescuing a cart after it's abandoned, the agent removes the friction that causes abandonment in the first place - at the live moment of intent, inside the conversation. The two aren't mutually exclusive, but a link fired the second a shopper says "yes" will out-convert an email sent two hours later almost every time.

How to start using AI checkout links

  1. Connect your Shopify store so the assistant can read your live catalog, variants, and stock.
  2. Make sure your discount codes are real and active in Shopify - the assistant only offers codes it can validate.
  3. Enable checkout links on the Business plan, where the assistant resolves variants and builds the cart permalinks.
  4. Let it run in conversations - the agent recommends grounded products, checks stock, validates any discount, and generates the link the moment a shopper is ready to buy.

FAQ

What is an AI checkout link?

An AI checkout link is a pre-filled URL generated by an AI agent during a chat that loads the exact product variant, quantity, and a validated discount, then sends the shopper straight to checkout - removing the add-to-cart and code-entry steps.

What is a Shopify cart permalink?

A Shopify cart permalink is a native URL in the form /cart/{variantId}:{quantity}?discount=CODE that pre-loads specific variants and quantities into a cart and can apply a discount at checkout.

Does Chatonbo process the payment?

No. The checkout link sends the shopper to your own Shopify checkout. Chatonbo never handles or processes payment - it only builds the link that gets the shopper there.

Will the AI ever offer a fake discount code?

No. Chatonbo validates every discount against your live store before offering it. If a code isn't valid or active, the assistant won't use it.

How does it avoid recommending out-of-stock items?

The assistant recommends from your live catalog and runs a stock check before building a checkout link, so it won't send shoppers to checkout for something that's sold out.

Which plan includes checkout links?

Checkout links are included on the Business plan ($59/mo). Free and Pro plans do not include them.

Turn conversations into checkouts

The gap between "I'll take it" and a completed order is where most online sales quietly die. An AI checkout link closes that gap to a single tap - the right variant, in stock, with a discount that actually works, on your own Shopify checkout.
