Shopify Apps to Pair With an AI Chat Agent: Upsells, Reviews, Tracking, Returns and Email
TL;DR: An AI chat agent is good at one thing: answering the shopper who asks. It does not show an offer to the shopper who never opens the chat, collect reviews, run a tracking page, process a return or send the follow-up email. On a small Shopify store, five app categories cover those gaps: upsells (Candy Rack), reviews (Judge.me), order tracking (CWILL Order Tracking), returns (AfterShip Returns & Exchanges) and email and SMS (Klaviyo). This guide explains what each one adds, why it pairs well with chat, and what it costs as listed on the Shopify App Store in October 2026.

What does an AI chat agent cover, and what does it leave out?
In Chatonbo's study of 5,470 website chat conversations on 246 live assistants, 46.9% of Shopify conversations were product questions (fit, materials, compatibility, which of two items to buy) and 7.8% were order status. Returns were only 0.5% of all conversations. 39% of conversations started outside 9:00 to 18:00, and 12.8% ended with the visitor leaving contact details. The full method is on the What shoppers ask an AI chat assistant study page.
That tells you where chat earns its place: answering product questions from the live catalog, looking up an order, and capturing a lead after hours. It also tells you what it does not touch:
- Shoppers who never open the chat. Most visitors do not. They still see the product page, the cart and the checkout.
- Proof from other buyers. A chat agent can quote a review, but it cannot collect one.
- The post-purchase stretch. Tracking pages, delivery notifications and returns happen after the visit, often by email.
- Getting the shopper back. Abandoned-cart and win-back messages need an email or SMS tool.
The apps below each own one of those moments.
1. Upsells and cross-sells: Candy Rack
What it is: Candy Rack, by Digismoothie, is a Shopify upsell and cross-sell app that shows offers in eight placements across the product page, the cart, checkout and post-purchase. It includes volume bundles with tiered quantity pricing, a slide-out cart drawer with upsells and a rewards bar, and an AI mode where Candy Rack AI or Google Gemini picks the offers. It supports A/B testing through Intelligems.
Why it pairs well with chat: the two reach different shoppers. A chat agent recommends a matching product to the shopper who asks ("what goes with this boot?"). Candy Rack shows a relevant add-on to every shopper at add to cart and checkout, including the majority who never type a word. When a shopper does ask in chat and adds the suggested item, the cart drawer offer is the second, quieter nudge.
Listing facts (October 2026): 4.9 stars from 265 reviews, Built for Shopify, live since 2018. Free on trial and development stores; paid plans by monthly orders: Lite $29.99 (up to 50 orders), Starter $39.99 (51 to 200), Growth $59.99 (201 to 500), with an 8-day free trial.
Tip: keep the chat agent and the upsell app recommending from the same logic. If Candy Rack offers a care kit with boots, make sure the assistant knows about the care kit too, so the shopper does not get two different suggestions.
2. Product reviews: Judge.me
What it is: Judge.me Product Reviews collects and displays product and store reviews, including photo and video reviews, syncs Google reviews and rich snippets, and imports reviews from other sources.
Why it pairs well with chat: shoppers often ask chat a question that is really a review question: "does this run small?", "is it comfortable all day?". Reviews on the product page answer those at scale, and the assistant can point to them. The two together cut the "is it any good" doubt from both sides.
Listing facts (October 2026): 5.0 stars from more than 49,000 reviews, Built for Shopify. The free plan includes unlimited reviews, photo and video reviews, widgets and Google rich snippets. Awesome is $15 a month and adds automatic review reminders, Q&A, AI replies and 130+ integrations.
3. Order tracking: CWILL Order Tracking
What it is: CWILL Order Tracking (formerly ParcelPanel) gives the store a branded tracking page, tracks orders across 1,600+ carriers, sends shipping notifications and shows estimated delivery dates.
Why it pairs well with chat: a connected chat agent answers "where is my order" in the moment (see our guide to order tracking questions in Shopify chat). A tracking app keeps the shopper informed between visits with notifications, so fewer of them need to ask at all. The assistant can link to the tracking page in its answer.
Listing facts (October 2026): 5.0 stars from 3,190 reviews, Built for Shopify. Free for 20 orders a month; Essential $11 a month (200 orders), Professional $59 (2,000 orders), with a 7-day trial on paid plans.
4. Returns and exchanges: AfterShip Returns & Exchanges
What it is: AfterShip Returns & Exchanges runs a branded returns page with automatic approvals, return labels, refunds and exchanges, eligibility rules and return windows.
Why it pairs well with chat: an assistant should explain the returns policy accurately and send the shopper to the right place, but it should not process refunds itself. A returns portal is where that action belongs. The pairing is simple: the chat agent answers "can I return this?" from your policy page and links to the portal.
Listing facts (October 2026): 4.7 stars from 1,542 reviews, Built for Shopify. Free plan with shopper-funded returns; Essentials $19 a month (20 returns, then $0.50 each); Premium $119 a month.
5. Email and SMS: Klaviyo
What it is: Klaviyo is an email, SMS and WhatsApp marketing platform with Shopify data built in: abandoned-cart flows, segments, campaigns and pop-ups.
Why it pairs well with chat: chat captures intent, email follows it up. When a shopper leaves an email in chat after hours, that lead should land somewhere that can send the next message. On Chatonbo, chat leads can be sent on with a webhook, so a tool like Klaviyo can pick them up.
Listing facts (October 2026): 4.7 stars from 3,414 reviews. Free up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month; email plans from $20 a month and SMS from $15 a month.

How to set the stack up without the apps getting in each other's way
- Start with the gap that costs you most. If chat already answers product questions, the next gain is usually upsells at the cart (Candy Rack) or reviews on the product page (Judge.me).
- Give every app one corner. A cart drawer, a reviews tab and a chat launcher can overlap on mobile. Put the chat launcher where nothing else sits, and check a real phone, not just the desktop preview.
- Teach the assistant what the other apps do. Add one short FAQ: where the tracking page is, where the returns portal is, which bundles you offer. The assistant can only link to what it knows exists.
- Keep offers consistent. The product the upsell app suggests and the one the assistant recommends should agree.
- Measure one change at a time. Install one app, give it two weeks, then add the next. Five apps installed on the same day make it impossible to tell which one moved the numbers.
Where Chatonbo fits
Chatonbo is the chat layer in this stack: an AI agent that learns your products and policies from the store, answers shoppers 24/7, looks up orders and sends one-tap checkout links. It installs from the Shopify App Store in a few minutes (the Shopify AI agent page shows the flow), and you can see it answer for your own store first at chatonbo.com/try-it, no signup needed.
A good store stack is not one app that does everything. It is a few apps that each do one job well, and stay out of each other's way.
FAQ
Which Shopify apps work best alongside an AI chat agent?
Five kinds: an upsell app for offers on the product page, cart and checkout (for example Candy Rack), a reviews app (Judge.me), an order tracking app (CWILL Order Tracking), a returns app (AfterShip Returns & Exchanges) and an email and SMS app (Klaviyo). Each covers a moment the chat agent does not own.
Does an AI chatbot replace an upsell app on Shopify?
No. A chat agent recommends products to the shoppers who open the chat, which is a minority of visitors. An upsell app like Candy Rack shows offers to every shopper at fixed points such as add to cart, the cart drawer, checkout and the thank-you page. The two cover different shoppers and work best together.
Will these apps conflict with a chat widget?
Usually not, because they run in different places. The main thing to check is the corner of the screen: a slide-out cart drawer, a reviews tab and a chat launcher can overlap on mobile, so place the chat launcher on the opposite side or above the sticky bars.
How much does this app stack cost for a small Shopify store?
Several of these apps have free plans for small volumes (Judge.me, CWILL up to 20 orders a month, Klaviyo up to 250 profiles, AfterShip Returns shopper-funded). The paid entry points listed in October 2026 were Candy Rack from $29.99 a month, Judge.me Awesome $15, CWILL Essential $11, AfterShip Returns Essentials $19 and Klaviyo email from $20. Chatonbo Pro is $19 a month.
