TL;DR: An AI chatbot can track Shopify orders for customers when it is installed as a Shopify app with permission to read orders: the shopper gives the order number and the email used at checkout, and the chatbot answers with the live status, the carrier and the tracking link, at any hour. A chatbot without that access must say so, take the order details for the team, and never pretend it searched. Chatonbo includes live order lookup on its Pro and Business plans, and since October 2026 every Chatonbo assistant without store access follows the honest no-lookup rule described below.

Why is "where is my order" the question to get right?

Order status is one of the most common things a shopper types into a store chat, and it is the one with the highest cost of a wrong answer. A shopper asking about a parcel is already waiting; an invented delivery date turns a routine question into a complaint. Across live assistants on store and business sites, 39% of conversations start outside 9:00 to 18:00 in the visitor's local time, so a large share of these questions arrive when no human is at the inbox ([AI chatbot statistics 2026](/research/ai-chatbot-statistics-2026)).

Handled well, order tracking in chat does two things at once: the shopper gets an answer in seconds, and the ticket never reaches your inbox.

How does an AI chatbot look up a Shopify order?

The chatbot does not guess from the conversation. It calls Shopify with the details the shopper gives and reads the order back.

StepWhat happensWhat the shopper sees
1. AccessThe Chatonbo app is installed from the Shopify App Store and the store grants permission to read orders during the installNothing, this is one-time setup
2. AskShopper writes "where is my order" or similarThe assistant asks for the order number and the email used at checkout
3. VerifyThe assistant matches both against the order in ShopifyIf both match: status, carrier, tracking link and the item list. If only one matches: status and carrier, and a request for the other detail
4. Not foundNo order matchesThe assistant says so plainly and offers to pass the question to the team

The two-detail check is deliberate. Status and carrier alone are low-risk; the item list and the tracking link are personal, so they are shown only when the shopper has proved they own the order. Chatonbo's Shopify app is approved under Shopify's protected customer data rules, which is the review every app must pass before it can read order details on behalf of a shopper.

What must a chatbot never do with orders?

This is the part most comparison articles skip. A chatbot that cannot see your orders will still be asked about them, and the default behaviour of a general-purpose AI is to produce a plausible answer.

Three things an honest assistant never does:

  • Never invents a delivery date, a carrier or a status.
  • Never says "I searched and could not find your order" when it had no way to search.
  • Never asks for the same details twice once the shopper has given them.

In October 2026 we made this a hard rule for every Chatonbo assistant that has no store access, for example a bot on the free plan or on a store that has not installed the app. When a shopper asks about an order, the assistant says it cannot check orders from this chat, asks for the order number and the email used at checkout, and tells them the team will follow up by email. The details are sent to the store owner with the conversation. It is a less impressive answer than a live lookup, and it is the right one.

How do you set up order tracking in a Shopify chatbot?

  1. Install Chatonbo from the Shopify App Store. The install grants the order-read permission; there is no separate API key.
  2. Switch the assistant on under Online Store, Themes, Customize, App embeds. No theme code.
  3. Be on a Pro or Business plan. Order lookup, live stock checks and discount validation are part of those plans; the free plan collects the shopper's details and sends them to you instead.
  4. Test it: ask your own assistant about a real order with the order number and the checkout email, then with only one of them, then with a made-up number. You should see a full answer, a partial answer with a question, and an honest "not found".

The [Shopify setup guide](/guides/shopify) walks through each screen, and [we install it for you](/install-for-me) if you would rather not.

What else should the same chatbot handle after purchase?

Order status rarely arrives alone. The same shopper asks about returns, exchanges, a missing item or a discount code that did not apply. An assistant that reads your returns policy and shipping terms answers those from your own pages, and it can offer the live handoff to a team member when one is online, or take an email when nobody is. Only 1.0% of conversations ask to be handed to a human, and complaints are 0.4% of storefront messages, so a well-grounded assistant handles the large majority of after-purchase questions on its own.

Chatonbo also files any question the assistant could not answer to the store owner straight away, with a one-click link to add the answer, so the second shopper with the same question gets a real reply.

Which Shopify chatbots can track orders?

Chatonbo, Gorgias, Zipchat, Rep AI and Shopify Inbox read live order status from Shopify. Chatbase, ManyChat and Intercom need an integration or a custom action for order lookup. The full ranking with prices is in [the best AI chatbot for Shopify in 2026](/blog/best-ai-chatbot-for-shopify-2026), and the side-by-side pages are at [Chatonbo vs Gorgias](/compare/gorgias) and [Chatonbo vs Shopify Inbox](/compare/shopify-inbox).

What does the shopper actually see?

A typical exchange on a store with the app installed, written out so you can compare it with your current tool:

  • Shopper: "Where is my order?"
  • Assistant: "I can check that for you. What is your order number, and which email did you use at checkout?"
  • Shopper: "1047, [email protected]"
  • Assistant: "Order 1047 shipped on Tuesday with UPS and is out for delivery today. Here is the tracking link. It contains the blue runner in size 38 and the socks. Anything else I can help with?"

And the same first message on a store where the assistant has no order access:

  • Assistant: "I cannot check orders from this chat, but I will get it to the team. What is your order number and the email you used at checkout? They will follow up by email."

The second answer is shorter and less satisfying, and it is the right answer. The shopper knows exactly what will happen next, and nobody has been told a parcel is "on its way" by a bot that could not know.

How do you measure whether it is working?

Three numbers, all visible in the conversation list:

  1. The share of order-status conversations that end without a handoff or an email to the team. On a store with the app installed this should be the large majority.
  2. The share of conversations that ask for a human, which sits around 1.0% across live assistants. A rising figure usually means the assistant is answering something wrongly, most often a policy question, not an order question.
  3. The order-status tickets left in your inbox at the end of the week. This is the number the store owner feels.

See it on your own store

Enter your store URL and Chatonbo drafts an assistant from your products and policies in about two minutes. Install the app afterwards and order tracking is on. [Try it on my store](/try-it).

FAQ

Can an AI chatbot track Shopify orders for customers?

Yes, when it is installed as a Shopify app with permission to read orders. The shopper gives the order number and the checkout email, and the chatbot returns the live status, carrier and tracking link from Shopify. Chatonbo includes this on the Pro and Business plans.

What does the chatbot need to look up an order?

Three things: the Shopify app installed on the store, the store's permission to read orders (granted during install), and from the shopper, the order number and the email used at checkout. With only one of the two it gives status and carrier and asks for the other before showing the items.

What should a chatbot say when it cannot check orders?

That it cannot check orders from this chat, then ask for the order number and the checkout email and promise a follow-up by email. It must never say it searched and found nothing, and never guess a delivery date.

Does order tracking in chat reduce support tickets?

It removes the most repetitive after-purchase question from the inbox. Order status is one of the top intents on storefronts, and 39% of website chats start outside business hours, when nobody would have answered until the next day.

Is customer order data safe in a chatbot?

It should be shown only after the shopper proves they own the order. Chatonbo shows the item list and tracking link only when both the order number and the checkout email match, and the app is approved under Shopify's protected customer data rules.
