Can an AI Chatbot Cancel a Shopify Order? How It Works, What It Checks and When It Refuses (2026)
TL;DR: Yes, an AI chatbot can cancel a Shopify order, under conditions. On Chatonbo the assistant cancels an order that has not shipped, with a full refund to the original card through Shopify, when the shopper gives the order number and the order email, sees exactly what will happen and replies YES. The merchant turns the action on, can limit it to a number of hours after the order, gets an email for every cancellation and sees each one in a dashboard log. Order status is already 7.8% of chat conversations on Shopify stores and 39% of website chats start outside business hours ([what shoppers ask an AI chat assistant](/research/what-shoppers-ask-ai-chat-2026)), so the shopper who wants to cancel is usually writing when nobody is at the inbox. Available on the Pro and Business plans since October 31, 2026.
What does "cancel an order" mean in a chatbot?
A full cancellation of an unshipped order, performed in Shopify, with the whole amount refunded to the payment method the shopper used. It is the same operation the merchant would run from the Shopify admin by opening the order and choosing Cancel. The chatbot does not hold funds, does not issue store credit in place of a refund, and does not touch orders that have already left the warehouse.
That is a narrower promise than "the chatbot handles cancellations", and the narrowness is the point. A shopper who asks to cancel at 23:10 wants one of two outcomes: the order is cancelled now, or a clear statement that it cannot be and why. Both are better than a ticket that waits until morning.
How does the cancellation work, step by step?
- The shopper asks. "I want to cancel order 1042", "can I still cancel, I ordered the wrong size", or any phrasing with the same intent.
- The assistant asks for two things: the order number and the email address used on the order. Both must match the order in Shopify. With only one, the assistant does not reveal anything about the order.
- The assistant checks the rules. The order exists and the email matches; the order has not shipped; the order is inside the time window the merchant set, if one is set; cancellation is turned on for this store; the store has approved the Shopify permissions the action needs.
- The assistant shows what will happen. Which order, what amount will be refunded, and that the refund goes back to the original card. Nothing has changed yet.
- The shopper replies YES. Any other reply, or no reply, means nothing happens. The confirmation is enforced on the server, not left to the model.
- Shopify cancels and refunds. The assistant reports the result as Shopify returned it. If Shopify refuses or does not answer, the assistant says exactly that and does not claim the order was cancelled.
- The merchant gets an email and a log entry. Order, shopper, time, result, one line per action in the dashboard.
When does the chatbot refuse?
The assistant refuses, and says why, in five cases:
| Situation | What the shopper hears |
|---|---|
| The order has already shipped | That it cannot be cancelled now, with the tracking status, and the option to open a return once it arrives |
| The order is older than the merchant's window | That the cancellation window has passed and the request is passed to the team |
| The merchant has not turned cancellation on | That it cannot cancel orders from this chat and the team will follow up by email |
| The store has not approved the Shopify permissions | Same as above; the merchant sees a "needs approval" notice in the dashboard |
| The order number and email do not match | That it cannot find an order with those details, without saying which detail is wrong |
A refusal is always honest. The assistant never says "I have submitted this" when nothing was submitted, and it never invents a cancellation deadline the merchant did not set.
What does the merchant control?
Everything is off by default. In the Chatonbo dashboard, under the bot's Integrations, the Order help panel lists four actions: cancel an order, change the shipping address, returns and exchanges, and goodwill discount. Each has its own switch.
For cancellation, the merchant can set "only within N hours of the order" or leave it empty for no limit beyond "not shipped". A store that ships the same day might choose 2 hours; a store that batches shipments weekly might choose 48. The assistant states the rule to the shopper when it matters.
Per action the merchant receives an email, and the dashboard keeps a log of every action with its result, so a cancellation never happens without a trace.
What else can the same assistant do with an order?
- Open a return request on a shipped order, inside the merchant's return window and conditions. The merchant approves it in Shopify. See [AI chatbot for Shopify returns](/blog/ai-chatbot-for-shopify-returns).
- Issue a one-time goodwill discount code for a shopper who had a bad experience, capped at a percentage the merchant sets, one code per order.
- Change the shipping address on an unshipped order after a 6-digit code is emailed to the order email. This one is built but not yet available on live stores: it reads customer name and address fields that Shopify classes as protected customer data, and that use is pending Shopify's approval as of October 2026. We will say when it is on.
- Look up order status, carrier and tracking link, which has been available since earlier in 2026. See [AI chatbot order tracking for Shopify](/blog/ai-chatbot-order-tracking-shopify).
Why let a chatbot cancel orders at all?
Because the question arrives when nobody is there, and because the cost of a late answer is real. In Chatonbo's analysis of 5,470 website chat conversations on 246 live assistants, 39% started outside 9:00 to 18:00 in the visitor's local time. On Shopify stores, order status is 7.8% of all conversations. And in the [chatbot lead generation statistics](/research/chatbot-lead-generation-statistics-2026), 44% of order-status conversations end with the shopper leaving contact details, the highest of any topic: that is the shopper giving up on an answer and asking to be emailed later.
A cancellation that waits until morning often turns into a shipped order, then a return, then a refund with the shipping cost lost. A cancellation at 23:10 costs nothing.
Helpdesk tools that resolve tickets with AI tend to price per resolution. Chatonbo's order actions are included in the flat plan price: $19 a month on Pro and $59 on Business, with no per-action fee.
How do you turn it on?
- Be on the Pro or Business plan with the Chatonbo Shopify app installed on the store.
- Open the store in the Chatonbo dashboard, go to the bot's Integrations and find Order help. If the panel shows "needs approval", click the approve link: Shopify will ask you to grant the app permission to write orders, and you are back in the dashboard afterwards.
- Switch on Cancel an order. Optionally set the hours window.
- Ask your own assistant to cancel a test order and watch the email and the log entry arrive.
Existing Shopify stores on Pro and Business see the panel already; nothing changes on your store until you turn an action on.

FAQ
Can an AI chatbot cancel a Shopify order?
Yes, when three things are true: the chatbot is installed as a Shopify app with permission to write orders, the merchant has turned cancellation on, and the order has not shipped. On Chatonbo (Pro and Business plans) the shopper gives the order number and the order email, sees exactly what will happen, replies YES, and the order is cancelled with a full refund to the original card through Shopify.
What does the shopper have to provide to cancel an order in chat?
The order number and the email address used on the order. Both must match the order in Shopify. The assistant then shows what will happen (which order, what amount goes back to which card) and asks the shopper to reply YES before anything changes. Without an explicit YES nothing is cancelled.
Where does the refund go when a chatbot cancels a Shopify order?
To the original payment method, through Shopify. Chatonbo does not hold money or take payment details in the chat; the cancellation and the refund are performed by Shopify, exactly as if the merchant had cancelled the order in the Shopify admin.
When does the chatbot refuse to cancel an order?
When the order has already shipped, when the order is outside the time window the merchant set (for example only within 24 hours of the order), when the merchant has not turned cancellation on, when the store has not approved the Shopify permissions the action needs, or when the order number and email do not match. In each case the assistant says so plainly and takes the request for the team instead of pretending.
Does the merchant find out when the chatbot cancels an order?
Yes. Chatonbo emails the merchant for every action the assistant performs and writes each one to a log in the dashboard, with the order, the shopper, the time and the result. Every action is off until the merchant turns it on.
Can the chatbot also change the shipping address on a Shopify order?
Not yet on live stores. Address changes are built and require a 6-digit code emailed to the order email before anything is changed, but they use Shopify protected customer data fields that need Shopify approval, which is pending as of October 2026. Cancellation, return requests and goodwill discount codes are available now.
Which Chatonbo plan includes order cancellation in chat?
Pro ($19 a month) and Business ($59 a month), with the Chatonbo Shopify app installed. There is no per-action or per-resolution fee; the price is flat.
