5.8% of store chat conversations are about an existing order or a return. Most of them ask where the order is, a third ask about a return, one in eleven wants to cancel. Those shoppers leave their email almost five times as often as other visitors, and two in five write after hours. Every figure carries its data set and date.

A conversation counts as an order question when the visitor asks where an order is, asks about a return or exchange, asks to cancel, asks for a refund, or wants a delivery address changed. One conversation can ask more than one of these.

About one chat in seventeen. Product questions remain the bulk of store chat (59%), followed by shipping (11%) and pricing (10%). The order share moved between 3.6% and 8.1% month to month.

62%
of order questions are "where is my order": status, tracking number, or a missing confirmation email.
Returns and exchanges are 35% and cancellations 9% (a chat can be in more than one group). Refund-only questions are 1%, and nobody asked to change a delivery address in three months.

0.9%
is the median store's share of order questions; the highest store is at 48.6%.
Of 13 stores with at least 20 chats, 6 had no order question at all and 2 had more than a fifth of their chats about orders. Order questions follow order volume: a store that ships daily hears them every day, a store finding its first customers hears none.

44%
of shoppers with an order question leave their email or phone number in the chat, against 9.4% of all store chats.
A shopper asking about an order has already paid and identifies themselves almost five times as often as a browsing visitor. These are the easiest conversations to resolve and the costliest to leave unanswered.

41%
of order questions arrive outside 09:00 to 17:59 in the shopper's local time.
Lower than the 51% after-hours share of all store chats: people check on an order during the day, and browse at night. Still, two in five order questions reach a store when nobody is at the desk.

66%
of order questions are typed on a phone, and 58% run to three or more visitor messages.
Order questions are longer than the average store chat and more often mobile: the shopper is checking from a notification, not from a desk, and wants the thread closed there.

Sample: 1,317 storefront conversations on 88 Shopify stores running Chatonbo, August 2 to October 31, 2026, each with at least one visitor message and one answer. Dashboard tests, internal workspaces and app-review installs are excluded. A conversation is an order question when the visitor's messages match one of five groups: tracking (where is my order, order status, tracking number, missing confirmation or shipping email, or a conversation the assistant classified as order status), returns and exchanges (the words return or exchange, which also catches pre-purchase questions about the returns policy, or a conversation classified as returns), cancellation (the word cancel), refund (the word refund), and address change (change, update or wrong near address or shipping). Matching is on the visitor's own words in any language; messages in French and Hebrew matched on the same terms, so non-English order questions are undercounted. 77 conversations matched, on 15 stores; one conversation can match more than one group, so the group shares add to more than 100%. A lead is a conversation in which the visitor left an email or phone number. After hours is outside 09:00 to 17:59 in the local time of the visitor's country (76 of 77 order questions and 1,249 of 1,317 store chats had a mapped country). Device is read from the stored user agent. The per-store spread uses the 13 stores with at least 20 chats in the window. The customer base is concentrated in the United States, Israel, France and Spain, so the figures describe these stores and not Shopify as a whole. Tracking questions have been answered from the store's Shopify order data for months. Since October 31, 2026 Chatonbo can also cancel an unshipped order, open a return request and issue a one-time goodwill code, each only after the shopper confirms with YES. Address changes wait on Shopify's review of customer-data access.
