TL;DR: You reduce customer support tickets for an online store with AI by letting an assistant answer the repetitive questions from your own sources of truth, order status from the store, shipping and returns from your policy pages, sizing and stock from the catalog, and by making sure it hands over honestly when it cannot answer. Done this way, a large share of the inbox never becomes a ticket: OMC reports 30% of support tickets resolved by its assistant alongside 40% more leads, and only 1.0% of conversations on live assistants ask for a human. The method below is the one we see work across live stores.

Which tickets can AI actually remove?

Start with the inbox, not the tool. Most store tickets are a small number of questions asked many times, and each of them has an answer that already exists somewhere on your site or in your store data.

Ticket typeSource of truthWhat the assistant needs
Where is my orderThe store's order dataApp installed with order-read permission; order number and checkout email from the customer

Sizing and fitSize guide, product descriptionsThe guide uploaded as a PDF or page

What shoppers ask bears this out: product questions are about a third of all conversations, and on storefronts the most common single intents are discounts, product recommendations, price and order status, followed by shipping, sizing and stock ([what shoppers ask an AI chat assistant](/research/what-shoppers-ask-ai-chat-2026)). Everything in that list is answerable from a source of truth. That is the territory where tickets disappear.

Step 1: give the assistant the real sources, not a script

An assistant that answers from a hand-written FAQ drifts out of date in a month. One that reads the actual policy pages, the live catalog and the store's orders stays right. On Shopify that is an app install; on WooCommerce the plugin; on any other site the pages plus uploads. Add the documents customers ask about most: the size guide, the shipping table, the warranty terms. Everything is indexed within a minute.

Step 2: make the honest answer the default

The fastest way to turn a deflected ticket into two tickets is a confident wrong answer. Two rules matter most:

  • Orders. If the assistant has no order access, it must say it cannot check orders from this chat, take the order number and the checkout email, and promise a follow-up. Never "I searched and could not find it". Chatonbo made this a hard rule for every assistant without store access in October 2026.
  • Unknowns. When the site does not contain the answer, the assistant says so and offers to pass the question on. It does not improvise a policy.

Honesty is also what keeps the human-handoff rate low. Customers who get a straight "I cannot see that, here is what I will do" rarely escalate; customers who get a vague answer always do.

Step 3: design the handoff so it is rare and real

Only 1.0% of conversations on live assistants ask to be handed to a human, and complaints are 0.4% of storefront messages. Those few matter, so the handoff must work:

  • When a team member is online within your live chat hours, the assistant offers a live handoff and the person takes over the conversation from the dashboard.
  • When nobody is online, the assistant takes the customer's email and the team gets the full conversation. The customer is told what will happen and when.
  • A visitor who asks for a person or raises a complaint is flagged to the owner a couple of minutes later, so nothing waits in a queue overnight.

The [live chat assistant page](/solutions/live-chat-agent) shows the inbox side of this.

Step 4: close the gaps every week

Every assistant meets questions it cannot answer. Chatonbo sends the owner each one as it happens, with a one-click link to add the answer, and lists them under "questions your assistant could not answer" on the Knowledge page. Spending ten minutes a week on that list is the single highest-return habit for ticket reduction, because every answer you add removes a repeat question permanently.

Watch the after-hours share too. 39% of website chats start outside 9:00 to 18:00 in the visitor's local time. Those are the tickets that used to wait until morning and the ones where an assistant answers in seconds.

What results have been published?

  • [OMC](/customers/omc): 30% of support tickets resolved by the assistant, 40% more leads from the website, first response around the clock.
  • [JetServer](/customers/jetserver): 44% more online hosting purchases, with undecided buyers getting the "which plan" answer in the same session.
  • [Kamatera](/customers/kamatera): 34% more billable trial signups, because technical evaluators no longer leave with open questions.

Each case study carries the customer's own figures and the situation behind them.

What does it cost against a helpdesk?

Helpdesk AI is usually priced per resolution or per ticket on top of per-seat plans, which means the better it works, the more you pay. Chatonbo is flat: free to start, Pro $19 a month for 5,000 conversations with order lookup and stock checks, Business $59 a month for 10,000 with unlimited team members. The [pricing page](/pricing) has a slider that compares the flat price with per-resolution and per-ticket tools at your own volume, and [Chatonbo vs Gorgias](/compare/gorgias) and [Chatonbo vs Intercom](/compare/intercom) go through the helpdesk comparison in detail.

How do you measure the reduction?

Pick one week before the assistant and compare it with the fourth week after. Four numbers are enough:

  1. Tickets in the inbox by type: order status, shipping, returns, sizing, other. The first four should fall sharply; "other" is where the next round of knowledge work is.
  2. Conversations handled by the assistant with no handoff and no email to the team. This is the deflected volume.
  3. Human-handoff rate: the share of conversations that asked for a person. Across live assistants it is around 1.0%. If yours is several times that, read those conversations; the cause is almost always one missing or wrong answer, not a general dislike of chat.
  4. Unanswered questions on the Knowledge page. The list should shrink week by week as you add answers.

Do not measure "chats started" as a success metric. A chatbot that opens on every page and gets ignored produces plenty of chats and no fewer tickets. The number that matters is the inbox on Monday morning.

Which tickets should stay with a person?

Complaints about damaged goods, custom orders, wholesale enquiries, refund decisions outside the policy, and any conversation where the shopper is upset. These are a small share of the total, and they are the conversations that decide whether a customer stays. The assistant's job is to recognise them quickly and hand over, not to handle them. Set the live chat hours on the bot so the handoff is offered when someone is actually there, and keep the dashboard open during those hours.

Start with your own inbox

Enter your store URL and Chatonbo drafts an assistant from your pages in about two minutes. Ask it the five questions you answered most often last week and see how many it already handles. [Try it on my store](/try-it).

FAQ

How much can an AI chatbot reduce support tickets for an online store?

It depends on how many of your tickets are repeat questions the site could answer. OMC, a B2B company, reports 30% of support tickets resolved by its Chatonbo assistant. Stores with heavy order-status and shipping traffic tend to see the largest share, because those are the easiest questions to automate well.

Which support questions should be automated first?

The repetitive ones with a known answer: order status, shipping times and costs, returns and exchanges, sizing, stock and discount codes. Together they are the bulk of a store's inbox, and each has a source of truth the assistant can read.

Will customers be annoyed by an AI chatbot?

The data says no, as long as the answers are right. Only 1.0% of conversations on live assistants ask to be handed to a human, and complaints are 0.4% of storefront messages. What customers reject is a wrong or vague answer.

What happens when the AI cannot answer?

It should say so, take the question for the team and, when a team member is online, hand the chat over live. Chatonbo also sends the owner every unanswered question with a one-click link to add the answer, so the next customer gets a real reply.

Does reducing tickets with AI cost more as volume grows?

Not with flat pricing. Chatonbo charges $19 a month for 5,000 conversations and $59 for 10,000, with no per-resolution or per-ticket fee, so a busy month does not raise the bill.
